Designing a One Day School Classroom

Rather than a 2D design, this 3D model brought to life the design for the Central Stars One day School classroom at Alexandra Primary.  What do you think?

Our dream classroom has bright wallpaper, beanbags, paintings on the walls and comfy sofas!  We would like this classroom because it would be a good learning environment for us.  We also like animals, so that is why we have a birdcage on the roof.

One of my goals for this term is to increase my hand-eye co-ordination, and ability to follow instructions by doing more origami.
More difficult designs are a real challenge but the owls I completed look really fantastic!

Historical Change

Our topic for today was Historical Change and we looked at The Holocaust.  We chose from 4 topics:  Medical experimentation, The science of Racism, Children's experiences or Anne Frank and other secret diaries and then had the chance to present our learning in a range of ways.

This led on from our first philosophical enquiry
( "If we're threatened, should we fight & if we kill, should we be punished"
Bryn and Kerryn)
Using this quote from George Santyana as a stimulus:
"Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it"

We chose to do a painting and a poem about the chimneys in the concentration camps from WWII.  Our main goal for the painting was to make it reflect what the camps were like.  We used black and grey for the cremation chamber to represent death and darkness, and we used fingerprints to represent all the people that died.

Smoke

The black clouds filled the sky
We all knew what it meant
It came from the chimneys up so high
above the place we were sent
The building below was dark and cold
Oh the horror these walls kept
Behind the gate, death awaits
To join those who have slept

Emma

I chose to create a painting.  My painting represents all the Jews that were killed, and how even though we are ALL different, they were singled out, along with other groups like Gypsies.  The red splatters represent the blood spilled.

The sterlilization laws enacted by the Nazi regime affected Franziska Schwaz and her family by telling them (not literally) that because they were deaf (or some of them were) they were potentially useless and not needed in society.  Franziska fell victim to this ‘scientific selection’ simply because she was deaf.  As did many others because they were blind or handicapped (physically or mentally).  Her mother escaped sterilization but Franziska did not.  She was taken to a hospital and locked up with two other deaf teenagers.  She was given an injection and then operated on.  After the operation, she could go home.  But the operation meant she would not be able to have her own children.  The Nazi’s believed by doing this that they could eliminate deafness.

Anne Frank Facts
Born: 12th June 1929, Frankfurt, Germany.
Died: March 1945, Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Germany.

Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl that lived during WW2. In 1942 she and her family were forced into hiding because of the holocaust, but in August 1944 she and her family was betrayed by someone and were arrested and sent to Auschwitz labor camp in Poland.

Family
Otto Frank
1889-1980
Otto was Anne’s farther, he liked Anne more than Margot because Anne him more than her mother. He was the only one of the family to survive the holocaust.

Edith Frank
1900-1945
Edith was Anne’s Mother; she was closer to Margot than Anne. She did not survive the holocaust; she died in Auschwitz in January 1945.

Margot Frank
1926-1945
Margot Frank was Anne’s elder sister; she followed her mother and was more religious than Anne. When they were in hiding Anne and Margot became good friends and were closer.

Wild Animal Poetry:  Writing a poem from the animal's point of view

Blinded to the world
Ghosts of the past  surround me
Winter mist lingers

While darkness awaits
an endless song plays
My ears ring as I listen
Adriana

The wind is rustling through my fur
The scent is strong
As if I were about to pounce
Right on my prey
and leap
into the brightness of the day
The sound of my paws upon the ground
The sound of the wind circling
Round and round
Like a whirlwind
Full of air
As my mind whispers
'Nearly there'
Amy

Wild things
In the herd
being followed by a bird
We are chasing some zebras
But some got eaten by hyenas
In the land where the wild things are

Small animals treat me with obedience
I wish all would treat me with obeisance
I am the lord of the wild
The king of everything mild
In the land where the wild things are

I can hear a loud booming of running
hooves
far off in the distance
I hear a loud growl
It sounds
like a cheetah
I take off
I can now see
them
seeing the world from a birds eye
view

The rainforest is my home
I love it.  I use it.  I protect it.
I run with my friends and capture my prey
I crawl through the bushes and climb the trees

The humans come and attack
They cut down the trees
they shoot the monkeys
We run.  We hide.  We crawl.  We climb.
The humans
Ruin the rainforest
Help us

Snakes
Ssssliding, ssslithering through the grasssss
Ssssnapping at bugssss everywhere
Long, ssskinny, sssmalll, and fat
Ssssome people hate usssss, sssome people love usssss
But everyone lovessss sssomething

We all rush around trying to live our lives
We hunt, run, swim and dive
To us, some humans can be respectful
Though some of their moves may be regretful
It is hard living in the wild
like watching over a small child

Mini Beast Haikus

Scuttle, scuttle now
Along the dark, jungle floor
Then off with the wind

Lights between the leaves
The glow worm twinkles 'hello'
Splitting the dark night
Adele

Gliding on the wind
Scent of fresh Spring flowers
Overwhelming me

A beetle scuttles
over the flat, dusty ground
Squish!  The beetles dead.

Mighty dragonfly
Living in blue
Swooping very fast to ground

Winter breaks the hive
Together we stand mighty
Alone-we will die

Lug homes on their backs
Dwelling in sorrowful gloom
Look!  Sad homeless slug

Flicking, dancing bugs
Under stars, bright summer moon
- Tiny glowing lights.

Butterflies Flutter
Dancing their graceful ballet
Under summer sun

Green bodies open
Into graceful butterflies
Fluttering around

Life, death, past, future
Souls linger surrounding all
Suffocating me

Scuttling over sand
Clambering through ancient time
